Nutrient Deficiencies in Chronic Diseases Nutrient deficiencies can be caused by a variety to reasons – inadequate intake being the one that is the first to come to mind. Other causes include improper absorption by the GI tract, lack of activity, lack of cofactors and failure to transport to appropriate tissue.
Recently I’ve come across a few people who think that flavored waters are a healthy drink. They are promoted as having vitamins, herbs and as being ‘enhanced’ waters. These enhanced waters cost more than plain water, but often are full of artificial colors, flavors and preservatives. They claim to be healthy alternatives to soda, to boost your vitamin intake. But a closer look at the labels will show you that they have artificial sweeteners such as sucralose of splenda.
While this summer has recorded the hottest temperatures around the globe, here in the Bay Area, we are experiencing the coolest summer in many years. To quench our thirst we remember to drink water on hot days, but on the cooler days we often forget to hydrate our body. Whether it is hot or cold outside, your body still requires water to function. Up to 60% of the human body is water and it is essential to life.
Stress and Adrenals We all deal with stress; stress from our job, our family, our lifestyle or an illness. The body’s response to stress is the same; however our ability to bounce back from stress differs from person to person. The difference has to do with our adrenal glands and how well are they functioning. The adrenal glands are responsible for the regulation of stress, through the synthesis of cortisol and adrenaline.
Fatigue Fatigue affects so many people around us that it is difficult to ignore. We run around our busy days with a mocha latte in one hand and steering wheel in the other; rushing from one appointment to the next. We, as a society, are sleep deficient and have a diet that is missing essential nutrients.
