Spring has definitely sprung here in the East Bay Area and it is reaffirmed by the layer of pollen adorning my car at the end of each work day. A recent article in the Contra Costa Times – mentioned that the allergists expect a ‘robust’ allergy season this year, expected to peak this month. Seasonal allergies occur when the body’s immune system overreacts to irritants such as pollen. In my office I have already begun to see patients who are starting to experience hay fever symptoms.
As a Naturopathic Doctor, I am often educating my patients about their diet. One question I often come across is, why is free range meat better? This video by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) highlights the unethical treatment of animals that are raised for food. These animals are kept in crowded, unsanitary barns with the corpses of other animals, they are abused physically. Animals kept in such conditions are constantly under stress, and this has a detrimental effect on the quality of food (meat, eggs, milk).
Winter is in full swing here in the East Bay Area and naturopathic doctor’s offices are seeing an increase in upper respiratory tract infections. There are several immune supportive supplements that you can take to keep yourself healthy this winter season – Vitamin D, Vitamin C, Zinc or Colostrum. In this blog I wanted to highlight a natural treatment, honey, that has had several scientific studies validate its use in a cough associated upper respiratory tract infections.
Today, December 1st, is World AIDS Day. 28 million people have lost their life due to this disease. We can only make progress if programs supporting AIDS awareness and organizations providing treatment are backed by strong financial contributions. It is estimated that 33 million people worldwide are living with HIV currently. How can you make a difference today? How are you honoring World AIDS Day?
