As we age there are distinct changes in the composition of our intestinal microflora (bacteria that is normally present in our intestines). As GI function declines, there is a decline in cellular immunity, because an important part of your immune function is lymph tissue that resides in the gut (gut associated lymphoid tissue – GALT).
